A lot of women change their hairstyle regularly, and coloring is just one part of the process. Even though gray hair is not something you should necessarily hide, especially nowadays with the gray hair trend, you might still want to change your natural color.

Some even play with colors to see what works best for them, or to just feel good about themselves.

Regardless the reason, dying your hair with a store-bought hair dye means exposing yourself to a lot of harmful chemicals. Some of them have even been linked to a suppressed immune system, respiratory and skin irritation, as well as weakened hair.

Therefore, you should try and color your hair naturally without using chemical color products. You might be surprised, but there are plenty of natural ingredients that can create new hair colors.

Many of them are probably in your kitchen right now, and even though they might not color your hair in the same intensity as the store-bought ones, remember that you’ll do something good for your hair.

For that purpose, here are several ingredients you can use as natural hair dyes.

8 NATURAL HAIR DYES

1. LEMON JUICE

Freshly squeezed lemon juice is great for highlights. Just spray and brush it through your hair and let it act for few hours. If you want lighter strands dry your hair on the sun. Mix it with chamomile to boost its effects.

However, you should be patient with this natural hair dye as it works quite slowly.

2. HERBS

You can use plenty of different herbs to dye your hair, depending on the desired color. Here are few, great examples you can try out:

Red Hair – marigold, calendula, hibiscus, or rosehip. These herbs will add few red highlights or deepen your red shape. Longer use of these herbs will give more color.

All you have to do is simmer some herb flowers in water for half an hour. Then, strain the liquid and pour or spray it on your hair after letting it cool. It’s best to dry your hair in the sun afterward.

Dark Hair/ Brunette – sage, nettle, and rosemary are ideal herbs for those with dark hair. Mix all three herbs and simmer for half an hour. Then, strain the liquid and brush or spray it on your hair. After 60 minutes, rinse it off.

You can do this every day after showering. It might take few days before seeing a noticeable result.

Blonde – besides chamomile, you can also use saffron, marigold, or sunflower petals. Also, rhubarb root is great if you like to hide gray hairs. All you have to do is simmer the root in 2 cups of water and pour the strained liquid over your hair.

To keep your dark color last longer, add black tea. For lighter hair, use catnip.

3. BEET & CARROT JUICE

Besides using each of these juices alone, you can mix them to get the desired color. Use beet juice for a more reddish hue (auburn, deeper red, or strawberry blonde). On the other hand, carrot juice will help you get a quitter orange tinge.

Pour the desired juice over your hair, and if you like to condition it at the same time, mix it with some coconut oil. Work the juice through and wrap your hair to let it act for 60 minutes.

Make sure you wear something to prevent your clothes and skin from staining. Then, rinse your hair and spray it with apple cider vinegar. You can repeat the next day if you like a darker color.

Another way to use beets is to puree them to get a reddish purple tone.

4. TEA

Even though you can’t turn blonde into brunette using tea, still you can use it to intensify or lighten your natural color. For instance, black tea can make your hair darker, while chamomile can lighten it.

The results will be even better if you expose your hair to sunlight afterward. Redheads, on the other hand, are recommended to use rooibos.

Make highly concentrated tea using 2 cups of water and 3 to 5 tea bags. Once it cools, apply it over your hair alone, or combine it with a conditioner. Adding some fresh or dry sage can help open up hair follicles and cover gray hairs.

Let the tea act at least for an hour. Or, if you like more intense color, let it stay overnight before rinsing it with warm water.

5. HENNA

Henna has a high coloring pigment that’ll dye your hair effectively, and naturally. Ideally, it’ll work great for brunettes and redheads since when used alone, it gives a red-orange hue. So, if you’ve seen hennas offering different colors, know that their producers have mixed it with some other ingredients.

However, you can mix it with chamomile to soften the results which can sometimes turn more orange than you’ll expect.

Mixing two cups of lemon juice with one cup of henna powder will give your own henna hair dye. You can help release the color by adding a tablespoon of vinegar to the henna mixture. Let it sit for about 5 hours to thicken and then apply it to your hair.

Use a comb to spread the mixture everywhere, and then a plastic wrap to wrap your hair. Let it act for two to three hours and then rinse.

6. WALNUT SHELLS

Even though walnut shells can stain your clothes and skin easily, it’s ideal if you like to color your hair dark brown.

Boil crushed walnut shells for half an hour. Then, strain after cooling it and apply to your hair. Leave it to act for 60 minutes and then wash it off with warm water.

For more intense color, boil the strained liquid until it becomes ¼ of its original volume. Put it in the fridge and let it cool before straining it once again and pouring it over your hair. If you can’t find walnut shells, feel free to use walnut powder.

7. TOMATO JUICE

There’s nothing better than tomato juice if your option is red hair. You’ll need a generous amount of it to massage it into your hair. Squeeze out excess juice and wrap your hair. Then, cover with a shower cup or plastic bag and let it stay for at least half an hour.

Now that you know you can dye your hair naturally without exposing it to many harsh chemicals, you can ditch the commercial hair dyes and use some of these natural ingredients.

However, if you can’t stop using them, you can at least give your hair a break from store-bought hair dyes occasionally, and try some of the above-mentioned natural hair dyes.

8. COFFEE

You can use this common ingredient to darken your hair naturally or add dimension to dark tresses. Besides preventing your hair from damaging, coffee can also make it shinier and healthier.

Make a cup of espresso or other strong coffee. Allow it to cool before mixing it with two tablespoons of coffee grounds and a few cups of leave-in conditioner. Apply the mixture to your hair and let it act for one hour. To make your color stay even longer, rinse with apple cider vinegar.

As an alternative, you can do a coffee rinse.

After shampooing your hair, pour lukewarm coffee over it and let it act for 20 minutes. Then, use apple cider vinegar to rinse your hair, and finally some warm water. Make sure you repeat the rinse for several days in a row in order to see noticeable results.
